Child's Play

Alas, my first broken bone. As a child. I missed out on the frustration, attention and excitement of this experience. Hence a lively dance tune celebrating the child in us all.

Bob Walser sent an announcement asking for contributions for a book of tunes dedicated to Bob McQuillan, an extratordinary New England contra dance accordion player and tunesmith who is 70 years old. Over the years Bob has written and dedi-cated tunes to hundreds of people. Although I have never met Bob, I know that we are kindred spirits and I couldn't resist the opportunity to write him this tune. (The book, "Tunes for Bob", is available from CDSS, 17 New South Street Northampton, MA 01060 or call (413) 584-9913)

Barbara's Big Move
02:42
Barbara Holden's apartment building, The Sovereign Hotel in Santa Monica had been"red tagged" after the quake. By a chance phone call I reached Barbara during the one hour she had been given to remove her belongings from the apartment She asked if I knew anyone who had a truck as all the U-Haul vans were in short supply. Even though my arm was in cast and I couldn't drive I helped her move by rounding up two vans and a truck. In honor of the afternoon adventure we had moving her stuff to the storage facility, I wrote this tune.

Vannoy's 25th
06:00
Vannoy Shaw was born and raised in Texas. Now Texas is a big state and Texans always do things in a big way. So for her 25th, Vannoy rented a castle in the in the Hollywood Hills, invited hundreds of guests and partied all day and night. To help her celebrate, I composed this BIG three part suite of tunes in her honor. The suite starts off with a zwiefacher ((WWWWD) X4 (WWWWWWW) X2 W), followed by a belly dance, and finishes with jig.

Two dozen Zen Buddhist monks were meditating as they marched through Northridge when they suddenly collided with the dynamic fiddling trio of Maria Jonsson, Ola Bäckström. and Carina Normansson (M.O.C.). In April, these three wonderful fiddlers, who live in the city of Falun in the province of Dalarna, Sweden, came to visit our Southern California Skandia dance class. Their superb playing inspired not only this tune but three others as well (see # 17, 19, 21).

Ola Bäckström's Vals
03:28
This tune was inspired by a haunting vals Maria wrote for her sister Katarina that starts off with an unusual 6 instead of 8 bar phrase. (Available on the CD "Musique Traditionelle Vivante de Suede" by Svart Kaffe - Planett WMD 242054).
